Kindred Productions is a UK based video company founded by Tim Mallett and Glenn Pearce. Their Space: 1999 documentaries were produced for the fan club Fanderson and the DVD company Network.
In 1991, Tim Mallett and Glenn Pearce produced and directed Space: 1999 Alphacon the Video for the fan club Fanderson. With interviews shot at the Alphacon convention in Leeds, in November 1990, the one hour documentary described the making of the series. In addition to interviews and footage from the convention, there are clips from the series and from 1976 film of the SFX studio.
In 1996, Fanderson released The Space: 1999 Documentary, a new 100 minute documentary in two parts. Some material was reused from the earlier Alphacon video (the Anderson, Bower and Kellett interviews), but the fan interviews, convention footage, and Hancock and Parsons interviews were dropped. The bulk of the material was new. In addition to the new interviews, there were clips from the series, clips from 1976 on-set interviews with Anderson, Freiberger, Landau, Bain, Schell and Wilson, and 1976 film of the SFX studio (the last also seen in the Alphacon video). A shorter version of the documentary was shown on the satellite channel Bravo. In 2004 it was released on DVD.
In 2005, the Network DVD boxset was released. The "extras" disc contained two featurettes edited from the 1996 documentary. Concept and Creation is taken from the opening of the documentary, and SFX and Design extracts the Keith Wilson, Brian Johnson and Martin Bower interviews. The same features appear on the Network Blu-ray boxset released in 2010.
In addition to the two re-edited featurettes from the Documentary, the Network DVD boxset contained a new documentary featurette, These Episodes, with new interviews. The interviewees are shown composited over backgrounds from the series. An expanded version appears on the Network Blu-ray boxset released in 2010.
This documentary has the same interviewees and style as the These Episodes feature. It first appeared on the Network Blu-ray boxset released in 2010.
