Koenig puts the last piece in the puzzle & sips some coffee. He opens the doors with his comlock & walks into Main Mission.

A.INT. MAIN MISSION

KOENIG: "Paul, Sandra. I'm turning in."
PAUL: "Lucky you."
KOENIG: "Four hours, fifty two minutes and twenty seconds."
SANDRA: "Congratulations. I thought noone would break the five hour barrier."
KOENIG: "Well, it's time we had a new puzzle."
PAUL: "Time we had a new world."
KOENIG: "Keep your eyes peeled. Goodnight."
PAUL (together): "Goodnight."
SANDRA (together): "Goodnight, Commander."
Koenig walks back through his office.

B.INT. CORRIDOR

Koenig walks past a comms post & pauses. He returns to the post & activates it.
KOENIG: "Paul?"
The screen shows the test card for a second, then breaks into clicking hieroglyphics flashing past.
KOENIG: "Paul?!" ((takes comlock)) "Paul!"
The comlock screen also shows hieroglyphics. He starts back to Main Mission.

KOENIG: "No. But someone or something is trying to talk to us."
SANDRA: "Commander. It is coming from somewhere along coordinate line three nine seven."
KOENIG: "Kano. See what computer makes of it." ((goes to Alan)) "Alan. You have an Eagle crew on standby?"
ALAN: "Yes, sir. Wayland and Cousteau, they're ready to go."

18.INT. COMMAND OFFICE

Koenig is at his desk, Victor leaning over it. Koenig takes a report.
KOENIG: "Thank you. Well, fortunately no casualties. Just impact damage."
VICTOR: "What puzzles me is where it came from."
KOENIG: "And how it got through our defence screens."
VICTOR: "They're setting it up for analysis. I'll check it out."
KOENIG: "Good." ((stands)) "Paul." ((walks to top of steps))

18.INT. MAIN MISSION

Continuation of above scene.
PAUL: "Nothing so far, Commander. They've just disappeared. No radar trace. No radio signals. It's as if Wayland's Eagle..vaporised."
DAVID: "Commander. The meteorite. Computer estimates it must have come from between orbital references three fifty and four hundred."
KOENIG: "Now, the last reported reference point for Eagle One was three nine seven. It's possible, just possible, that Eagle One was hit by that meteorite." ((goes down to press button; Alan appears on screen)) "Alan. There's a possibility the meteor may have collided with Eagle One. Is there any sign of wreckage or anything else out there?"
ALAN (on screen): "Well, I can't tell for sure; my instruments are picking up a lot of electrical disturbance."
KOENIG: "Alright then, let's check it out visually. Have Kelly take a space walk."
ALAN (on screen): "Right." ((screen blanks))
KOENIG: "I'll be in Technical." ((leaves))

19.EXT. SPACE (SFX)

Rescue Eagle.

20.INT. EAGLE PILOT SECTION

KELLY (wearing normal back-pack): "What do you suppose that is out there?"
ALAN: "Oh, I've no idea. And if I were you, I wouldn't wait round long enough to find out. Just look for Eagle One. Okay?"
KELLY (taking helmet from copilot seat): "Sure."
ALAN: "Hey, Kelly. Good luck."
KELLY: "You bet." ((he leaves))

ALAN: "Okay, Kelly. Go."

21.INT. EAGLE PASSENGER SECTION

Gripping the EVA controls, Kelly gently drifts into space. The door shuts behind him.

22.EXT. SPACE (SFX)

Kelly twists from the Eagle.

23.INT. TECHNICAL

Victor pulls a scan arm over the boulder. Koenig enters.
VICTOR: "Well, John. It may not look like much but it's very dense. And it's very heavy. We had to turn the gravity control right down to get it in here at all."
KOENIG: "How dense? How heavy?"
VICTOR: "Computer's finding out right now."
KOENIG: "Any surface marks on it? Any indication it may have hit Eagle One?"
VICTOR: "Huh..?"
KOENIG: "It's possible."
Victor goes to the computer. Helena enters.
HELENA: "I've got some early findings, on this stuff. It's a piece of the coating that I took from the surface of this meteorite. It's organic."
KOENIG: "Alive?"
HELENA: "Definitely. It's nothing we'd recognise, but- "
VICTOR (with readout): "John. Here it is." ((they go to him)) "Weight three hundred and twenty eight tons. Constituent elements titanium, stainless steel, aluminium, glass, carbon fibres, plastics, nuclear fuel cells... and a small amount of human tissue."
HELENA: "Human tissue?"
They walk back to the boulder & round it.
KOENIG: "We've found Eagle One." ((goes to comms post)) "Lee. Recall Carter immediately."
LEE (on screen): "But, sir. Kelly's out in space."
KOENIG: "Get them back immediately! Damn!" ((he starts to the door))

24.EXT. SPACE

Kelly hangs limply in space.

INT. EAGLE PILOT SECTION

ALAN: "Kelly, abort. We've been recalled." ((silence; presses button again)) "Kel, do you read me?" ((short pause)) "Kel? Are you receiving?" ((short pause)) "Kelly, signal if I'm getting through to you." ((silence; presses button)) "Main Mission."

INT. MAIN MISSION

ALAN (VO): "Eagle Four here."
PAUL: "Receiving you, Eagle Four."

25.INT. EAGLE PILOT SECTION

ALAN: "Paul, check out communication line. I'm getting no response from Kelly."
PAUL (VO): "No fault registering, Alan."
ALAN: "Then Kelly's in trouble. I'm going out after him."
Alan climbs out of his seat.

26.INT. MAIN MISSION

KOENIG (running in): "Stop him! Alan. Get away from that area."

INT. EAGLE PILOT SECTION

KOENIG (VO): "Right now."

Taking Kelly, Alan moves back.

EXT. SPACE (SFX)

53.INT. MEDICAL

Helena, Bob & a nurse lower Kelly onto the bed. Koenig & Victor look in through the observation window. Bob goes to the instruments.
VICTOR: "Those brain patterns are fantastic for a man who's totally anaesthetised."
BOB: "His brain activity is phenomenal. But his breathing is back to normal."
HELENA: "His heart and lungs have adjusted to what's going on inside of his brain."
KOENIG: "The question is, what is going on inside it?"
HELENA: "Well, he's suffering this non stop flow of impulses and ideas because that part of the cerebellum which controls his will is failing it's function. My hope is to stimulate the cerebellum and restore balance. Now, if we don't achieve that, very soon, he will simply burn himself up."

53.INT. OBSERVATION

Melita enters, disturbed.
KOENIG: "Melita."
MELITA: "Where is he? What has happened?"
KOENIG: "Melita."
MELITA: "They're going to operate. What's wrong, Commander?"
KOENIG: "Look, Melita. Your husband's okay. He's in good hands. His heart and lungs are fine. As soon as there's any news we'll let you know. I know it's no good to say don't worry, but try not to."
MELITA: "How can I?"
KOENIG: "Well, this isn't the best place, is it? Nurse, will you take Melita to her quarters."
MELITA: "Commander, I want to stay here.."
KOENIG (sympathetically): "I know you do. But you can't. Now go on. Please?"
Reluctantly, Melita is led out.
VICTOR: "John." ((Koenig goes to him; a monitor shows formulae)) "Mathematical formulae. That monitor only gives electronic indications of the patient's brain activity."
KOENIG: "Those are computer traces, Victor. They're certainly not Kelly's brain patterns." ((activates comms post)) "Kano. What's with computer?"
DAVID (on screen): "I can't understand it, Commander."
KOENIG: "Just tell me."
DAVID (on screen): "I've checked everything. Computer is transmitting data into Kelly's brain."
KOENIG: "Into his brain?"
DAVID (on screen): "Into him. And through him it's being beamed towards orbital reference three nine seven."
KOENIG: "Three nine seven. That's the point where Kelly was affected, and Eagle One was crushed. Kano. Shut down transmitters immediately, and analyse all data that's already gone out." ((screen blanks; Victor nods)) "Victor. Whoever was trying to talk to us, before Eagle One was crushed, is now using Kelly as a link to computer. And it's sending information out into space through Kelly."
The alien hieroglyphics now appear on the monitor.
VICTOR: "It's trying to communicate again, John."
The watch it. David reappears on the comms post.
DAVID (on screen): "The process is now reversed, Commander. Computer is now receiving data. It's coming from the same area of space and reaching computer via Kelly's brain."
KOENIG: "Kano. Let's shut them off. Close down receivers and analyse all incoming and outgoing data immediately." ((to Victor)) "Whoever was trying to talk to us is now talking to computer."
VICTOR (as hieroglyphics stop): "Maybe it couldn't get through to us. It needed Kelly as an interpreter."
KOENIG: "Yeah, but whatever it's doing, it might be reprogramming computer against us."

53.INT. MEDICAL

HELENA: "Increase anaesthesia two points."
BOB: "Two points."
HELENA: "He's still feeling pain. He could die of shock. I'm going to induce neuronic concussion."
She puts on a wielder's mask & holds an instrument above Kelly's forehead. A deep drill-like sound buzzes. She puts it down. Weakly Kelly opens his eyes.
KELLY: "What's happening?" ((he recovers awareness & rips off electrodes)) "You must not touch my brain!"
He sits up. Bob rushes to him but is thrown back into a tray. Kelly stands & Helena grabs a hypodermic; he grabs her & throws her back. Koenig runs in as Kelly backs against a door, Bob about to run at him.
KOENIG: "No! Let him go." ((Kelly leaves)) "Follow him. Take security. Let me know where he goes. But don't try to restrain him. Go!"
BOB: "Right." ((leaves))
Victor helps Helena to her feet.
KOENIG: "Helena. You alright?"
HELENA: "I'm alright."
VICTOR: "John, we can't just let him go."
KOENIG: "Victor. Whatever this thing wants it's using Kelly. So let's let Kelly lead us to it."

FADE OUT

ACT TWO

54.INT. COMPUTER ROOM

Kelly enters. Beyond Bob & 2 guards appear. The door shuts before them.

55.INT. CORRIDOR

BOB (taking comlock): "Commander. Kelly's gone into the Computer Room."
KOENIG (VO): "Good. Get Kano there. But don't go in until I arrive."
BOB: "Right, Commander."

56.INT. COMPUTER ROOM

The screens display the hieroglyphics & Alpha computer traces as Kelly types with lightning speed. He answers a buzz on a panel behind him before returning to his typing.

57.INT. CORRIDOR

Koenig joins Bob & the 2 guards.
KOENIG: "Alright, I want to try to talk to him, but if he gets violent we'll have to stun him, as a last resort. What's he up to?"
DAVID (arriving): "He's reprogramming so fast I can't get any details."
KOENIG: "Alright, you two come with me."
Koenig & the 2 guards go to the door.

58.INT. COMPUTER ROOM

The 3 enter.
KOENIG (cautiously): "Kelly?" ((goes to his right)) "Kelly." ((go to left)) "Kelly." ((Koenig walks to Kelly, still typing)) "Kelly, I want to talk to you." ((no reaction)) "Who are you transmitting to?" ((Kelly turns past Koenig to press a button before continuing)) "Who's talking to Alpha! Look, answer me, damn it!" ((Kelly grabs & throws Koenig back against panels; the guards raise lasers)) "No!"
Kelly resumes typing. Koenig walks to a panel & opens a hatch: he presses the 'Essential Services Only' 'Computer Master Switch'. The lighting dims & the computer lights die. Kelly grips his head & emits a faint moan. He stumbles to Koenig, picks him up & throws him aside powerfully. A guard shoots him. Kelly falls, but rises. The guards aim again.
KOENIG: "No!" ((Koenig stands as Kelly leaves)) "Let's see where he goes. Come on."

59.INT. CORRIDOR

Kelly stumbles from one side of the corridor to the other. Behind are Koenig, Bob & the others.
BOB: "The stun is neuronic concussion: the effect should be immediate."
KOENIG: "He's building a resistance against it."
Kelly stumbles round a corner to a door.

61.INT. LIVING QUARTERS

Melita is lying on the bed. From the door comes the weak voice of Kelly.
KELLY (VO): "Melita. Melita." ((she opens the door)) "Melita."
MELITA (shocked): "Kelly!"
KELLY: "Help me,-"
MELITA (taking him to sofa): "Kelly."
KELLY: "..help me!"
MELITA: "My darling, I thought.."
KELLY: "I've got to do it. I've got to... and they won't let me!"
MELITA: "What is it? Tell me?"
KELLY: "I've got to! You must make them understand... Make them under..uhh.."
Kelly is unconscious. Melita looks up to the doorway, in which Koenig & Bob stand.

EXT. SPACE (SFX)

Moon & space brain.

62.INT. COMMAND OFFICE

A command conference: Victor, Alan, David, Paul, Helena, Sandra. Koenig slowly walks round the table.
KOENIG: "Whatever that is out there, it's crushed Eagle One, it's done something to Kelly and through him taken over computer."
VICTOR: "By my calculations, we shall be at the spot where Eagle One disappeared in forty six hours."
KOENIG: "Which is exactly how long we have to take action."
ALAN: "Right, so we're back to the old problem of how to drive this Moon the way we want it to go."
VICTOR: "Only two practical schemes for that. Shockwaves and anti gravity screens."
KOENIG: "Both of those are aimed to reduce gravitational pull from another planet. This is neither a sun, a star, or a planet we're dealing with."
DAVID: "From the data we've managed to process, computer has determined the energy field has no mass."
PAUL: "So. We can't change course. What next?"
KOENIG: "Well, we know it's organic, and intelligent. So, if we load an Eagle with nuclear charges and aim it all at the centre, we might just be able to weaken it a little. Enough to reduce its crushing effect and let us get through."
ALAN: "Yeah. Well, I'd better get started on that right away, Commander."
KOENIG: "Alright, Alan. Do it." ((Alan leaves through Main Mission)) "Helena. We've got to get all the information we can from Kelly."
HELENA (defensively): "He's on life support system."
KOENIG: "Yes, I know. I'd like you and Kano to try and find out exactly what it is computer's transmitting."
HELENA: "John. The point about Kelly's condition.."
KOENIG: "Helena."
HELENA: "I don't.."
KOENIG: "We've got to try it."

EXT. LAUNCH PAD (SFX)

Eagle on pad, docked to port.

64.INT. EAGLE PASSENGER SECTION

Alan moves along the top row of charges, activating their fuses. Koenig enters.
KOENIG: "Well, how's it going?"
ALAN: "All the charges are fused, checked, and ready to go."

64.INT. EAGLE PILOT SECTION

They walk up the access corridor.
KOENIG: "Good. The best calculation we can get without asking computer is that all on board systems should be blown at eighteen forty five."
Alan sets the control console.
ALAN: "Destruct mechanism set for eighteen forty five."
KOENIG: "By that time the ship should be locked on target. And nothing will be able to divert it."
ALAN: "Well, I feel a lot happier now we've done something."
Alan moves a lever from 'Manual' to 'Auto', then they leave.

INT. MAIN MISSION

KOENIG (enters): "Alright, Paul. Lift her off." ((Paul operates the remote control))

70.INT. MAIN MISSION

Paul finishes & stands.
ALAN: "Well, whatever's out there, it's going to get one hell of a headache when it starts to squeeze that little bundle."
KOENIG: "I still don't like the idea of a preemptive strike against an enemy I don't understand."
ALAN: "They crushed Eagle One to a pulp, Commander. I don't see any reason to doubt they'll do the same to us too if they can."

EXT. SPACE (SFX)

Eagle flies into space.
Eagle heads to space brain.

70.INT. MAIN MISSION

VICTOR (appearing on screen): "John. Can you come to Technical Section right away?"
Koenig starts off.

INT. TECHNICAL

In a glass case is a small mass of foam.
KOENIG: "Foam?"
VICTOR: "Yep. That's what it looks like."
KOENIG: "It's also what the pilots saw. Where did it come from?"
VICTOR: "It's the same material we found encrusted onto Eagle One. It's reverted back to its original form."
KOENIG: "It looks harmless enough."
VICTOR: "Looks, yes. But it's highly unstable. We don't know why, but, ah, its chemical structure changes. It gains incredible weight and density."
KOENIG: "Are you saying this foam crushed Eagle One?"
VICTOR: "In sufficient quantity, John, this..foam as you call it, could crush anything."

65.INT. MEDICAL

Helena & Bob tend Kelly in bed.
HELENA: "What did he say to Melita?"
BOB: "He was struggling to get something out. There was something he had to do. He asked her to make them understand."
HELENA: "Them. Meaning us. We're not going to find out what he had to do unless he can tell us."
BOB: "Well, he's weakening fast."
HELENA: "It's an orthodox diagnosis now. Decline due to brain damage. Strange, isn't it, that the decline began just as soon as computer was shut down. And that's when the hyper activity in his brain...stopped..."
BOB: "You mean he was dependant on computer?"
She looks away.

70.INT. MAIN MISSION

VICTOR (entering): "John. Something interesting here. Kelly transmitted an astonishing amount of information in the short time he had. Course, I've only taken random samples, so the chances are I'm on the wrong track altogether."
KOENIG: "At least you're on some track. Go ahead."
VICTOR: "A lot of the data is physical information about the Moon itself; weight, density, dimensions."
KOENIG: "Trajectory?"
VICTOR: "It's got information about the gravitational pull of our every change of course we've made since we left the Earth's orbit."
KOENIG: "Wait a minute. Wait a minute. I think it's trying to find out if we can change course now."
VICTOR: "Right!"
HELENA (appearing on screen): "John. If we're going to save Kelly, I think our only chance is to restart computer."
ALAN: "And leave Alpha wide open."
KOENIG: "Whatever that thing is...maybe...just maybe, it's trying to help us."
VICTOR: "Help us to avoid a collision that'll destroy Alpha."
KOENIG: "We've got to find some way to make contact."
VICTOR: "Well. Of course, contact's already been made. Through Kelly."
KOENIG: "That's it! Of course!" ((snaps fingers)) "Through Kelly. Symbiosis!"
HELENA (on screen): "John. If you want me to link your mind to Kelly's so you can read his thoughts..no. The results could be catastrophic."
KOENIG: "Helena. If our Moon hits that force field..it'll be a catastrophe for all of us." ((to Paul)) "How long before that remote controlled Eagle detonates?"
PAUL (after typing): "One hour thirty five, Commander."
KOENIG: "Kano. Restart computer. We don't have too much time."

FADE OUT

ACT THREE

EXT. SPACE (SFX)

Moon horizon & space brain.

73.INT. MEDICAL

Kelly's eyes are open, staring up unseeingly. A nurse tends him. Koenig lies on his right, like Kelly wearing two electrodes on his forehead. Victor & Helena stand by the monitor.
VICTOR: "Symbiosis. I don't think you should be doing this, John."
KOENIG: "I know what I'm doing."
HELENA: "I've experienced it myself doing advanced psycho analysis. That was under very different conditions. To link you and Kelly electronically at this point.."
VICTOR: "Kelly's mind is connected in some way to this..thing, and we can't be absolutely sure that your mind won't be affected in the same way."
KOENIG: "We've got to do it, Victor."
HELENA: "We'll be monitoring your physical signs. If there are any chances we'll have to stop."
KOENIG: "Alright. Let's get on with it."
HELENA: "Connected here." ((Helena & Koenig hold hands))
BOB (by Kelly): "Connected here."
Helena press a switch. Koenig straightens in pain, then relaxes.
POV: Space Brain Sequence (sc 74): blurred images, of hieroglyphics, various lights & colours superimposed over Koenig. We see the space brain.
KOENIG (VO): "...It's a living organism...like a brain...pulsating with life, and light....It's the centre of a whole galaxy...maybe even hundreds of galaxies ...planets...stars... strange life forms... and in the middle of it all ...is this brain...."
The lights & symbols fade. Helena looks at Victor, then switches off & removes Koenig's electrodes. He sits.
HELENA: "Are you alright, John?"
KOENIG: "Yeah, I'm alright." ((pause)) "I think it worked. I think it worked. Hurtling towards that brain is our Moon. Now, the Eagle was just a fragment, so the brain surrounded it with antibodies and rejected it. But our Moon is a million times bigger than that Eagle."
VICTOR: "That's right. But the Brain is a million times bigger than the Moon. Make no mistake, John. It would crush us in the same way that it crushed Wayland's Eagle."
The hieroglyphics reappear on Kelly's monitor. Kelly sits up.
KELLY: "Commander. It is trying to help us. It's working with computer. We must go to Main Mission."

75.INT. MAIN MISSION

David takes a readout from his desk; someone passes it to Koenig. Helena takes another from a panel below the Big Screen. Koenig collects both & gives them to Tanya.
KOENIG: "Give them to Kelly."
Tanya gives Kelly, in a wheelchair, the readouts. He eyes them briefly.
KELLY: "It's possible."
KOENIG: "What's possible?"
KELLY: "We can divert the Moon away from the brain. Now, the plan is to increase the Moon's rate of spin by providing a series of forces at tangents to its axis. This will give the Moon an eccentric rotation and cause it to curve away from the centre of the brain. We haven't much time. The computer has plotted precisely the points at which the series of charges should be placed along the equatorial line."
KOENIG: "It is trying to save us. Paul. We're going to carry out that brain's instructions: we'll need every nuclear charge we've got so turn that nuclear Eagle around and bring it back to Alpha."
Paul types.

EXT. SPACE (SFX)

Eagle turns in a wide curve.

INT. MAIN MISSION

PAUL: "Remote controlled Eagle..now heading back for Alpha."
KOENIG: "Good. What's its position?"
PAUL: "Approximately..half way between the Moon and the brain."
KOENIG: "Which means those charges will explode the moment ..it arrives back here. Paul. Reprogram the on board computer and cancel out the detonation instruction."
PAUL: "Yes, sir."
KOENIG: "Now we're going to have to act fast if we're going to avoid collision. Alan. I want every single man standing by. As soon as that ship lands on the Moon's surface, take the charges and place them on the Moon's surface as per the brain's instruction. Victor, oversee the entire operation. Sandra,-"

PAUL: "Commander! Trouble!" ((Koenig joins him)) "There's a fault on the onboard computer!"
KOENIG: "What kind of trouble?"
PAUL: "Everything's gone dead. Which means it's locked on a course which will bring it down right in the centre of Moonbase Alpha. Where it will explode."
VICTOR: "An accident? Or is the brain intentionally going to destroy us?"
KOENIG: "No, Victor, I don't think it is intentional. Paul, I want the fastest Eagle we've got ready for immediate lift off."
Paul types & Koenig runs off.
