Moonbase Alpha is hailed by the people of Ultima Thule. The message is
enigmatic -- one voice claiming that Thule is a lost paradise and inviting
the Alphans to visit while another warns them it is a 'paradise with no end'
and to stay away. On the planet they find survivors from the Uranus
expedition of 1986. The Thulians have discovered immortality and ask the
Alphans to join them. However, the Alphans find that the Thulians have paid a
great price for their immortality.
Ultima Thule is an ice planet of harsh cold, blizzard snowfall and intense
smog, which reaches a cozy -60F (-51C) at midday and drops to -180F (-118C)
during the night.
