There are many collectibles for the Space: 1999 fan. Some are fairly easy to
obtain and are quite reasonably priced. Others are quite hard to find and can
set you back quite a large amount. The most persistent collector's have the
rarest of items -- actual props from the show. There are too many collectibles
to address in this short expo, so we're instead showcasing one item, and
providing links to places where you can get much more information.
The item shown is the Lyons Maid Ice Lolly card series. This was a set of 25 cards,
packaged in with ice lollies and distributed in 1976. One card was included with
each lolly. For other North Americans out there, an ice lolly is what we call a
popsicle. The cards had an artist's drawing from the series on the front and text
about the picture on the back. Note that the title of the card often didn't relate
very well to the picture.
The cards and wrapper are from the collection of Phill Wright. It is amazing that
these items are around 20 years later; who would think of saving a popsicle wrapper?
This is the first card in the series, magnified several times to make the pale
green text legible. All the other cards will be shown at actual size, with the
text typed beside.
This is a wrapper from one of the ice lollies:
