PROLOGUE:

FADE IN:

1 INT. ICE PALACE COMMUNICATIONS SECTION. 1

ON A SCREEN. SFX.

The frozen surface of a planet. Icy peaks are half
shrouded in mist. Far out in the darkness of space,
a moon sheds its pale light.

ANOTHER ANGLE

An area suggestive of, but much smaller than Main
Mission. It contains computer, sensory and communica-
tion equipment and a main screen. Incongruously, all
this equipment is housed in a cave of ice. The two
occupants wear garments made of a shaggy, woolly, white
fur.

DR. CABOT ROWLAND, a big man, appears even more out-
sized in his Cossack greatcoat and Russian style fur
cap, his leather trousers and boots. Seated before
the computer he studies a printout with practiced
fascination.

manner of a Shakespearean fool in search of an
audience. Smaller and slighter than ROWLAND, but
with a large expressive head, TANNER's full length
coat falls in tattered fringes that dance as he moves.
On his head he wears a fur cap, fashioned like that
of a fool, and his boots have turned-up toes.

TANNER

Say I was right. Admit that I Jack Tanner
did tell you - did prophesy - long

instrument.

He indicates the computer with a disdainful gesture.

ROWLAND

(humouring him wholeheartedly)

Yes, Jack, you were absolutely right!

TANNER executes his version of a buck-and-wing.

ROWLAND (Cont'd.)

But tell me, tell me sensibly,
how you knew...
