The Netherlands Antilles islands are in the South Caribbean Sea, off the coast of Venezuela. For much of the 20th Century their economy was dominated by the giant oil refineries of Shell and Exxon. In the 1970s the islands were collectively the Netherlands Antilles, administratively part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands; in 1986, Aruba became an independent country within the Kingdom, and in 2010 the Netherlands Antilles were dissolved, and Curaçao also became an independent country within the Kingdom.

In Aruba and Curaçao, Space: 1999 was broadcast as early as late 1975. Shell Curacao NV was a sponsor of the television series, according to the local newspaper Amigoe di Curacao of 3rd of October 1975. According to the press department of Shell Nos Isla, the series was a replacement for the successful Hawaii Five O. The series had already been sold to 101 countries and was going to be shown on a weekly basis. See the press report below

Shell presenteert tv-films Space: 1999

Aldus Nos Isla.
