EXT. CITY
Earth, a red sunset over busy city.
Lower angle, dark. Sound: busy cars.
An office entrance, with revolving door, as people enter. Sign on the side reads 'The International Lunar Commission'.
INT. BOARDROOM
A large diagram of space, with a white track marked 'Meta Probe'. Sound over: busy radio communications, including..
RADIO: "Fourteen seconds and counting."
Pull back as the Chairman walks away from the diagram, past a man with an over-head projector to Nardin & others gathered round a radio on the desk.
CHAIRMAN: "Countdown normal."
The deputy chairman enters, putting down his briefcase & taking off his coat.
DEPUTY: "I'm sorry, Mister Chairman, but the council meeting overran. No visuals?"
CHAIRMAN: "Sound only."
DEPUTY: "I'm surprised."
CHAIRMAN: "You shouldn't be. Our facilities here are already overworked. The satellite channels are programmed for the actual operation, not this exercise. Just like the others. The Meta Probe is on the dark side of the Moon." ((he looks out, through the curtains))
EXT. SKY
Night sky, Moon.
EXT. NDA 1
Eagle flies over the waste domes and tower.
INT. EAGLE PILOT SECTION
Two suited astronauts.
PILOT: "Paul, this is Eagle One."
INT. BOARDROOM
DEPUTY: "They're passing Navigation Beacon Delta."
CHAIRMAN: "Yes." ((he walks back)) "The Meta Probe training run use it as a landmark."
DEPUTY: "Have you reached a decision?"
CHAIRMAN: "Yes, finally." ((hands him folder; he opens it at the photo of Koenig)) "Koenig. He'll take over as commander of Moonbase Alpha. With unlimited powers."
DEPUTY: "Does he know yet?"
CHAIRMAN: "He's already on his way."
DEPUTY: "And Simmonds?"
CHAIRMAN: "I've appointed him Chief Of Liaison."
DEPUTY (looking at photo of Simmonds): "Also with full power, I trust?"
CHAIRMAN: "With all the authority he needs."
DEPUTY: "Over Koenig?"
CHAIRMAN: "With Koenig. They are on the same side."
DEPUTY: "The Meta Probe just cannot be allowed to fail."
CHAIRMAN: "A conclusion both unanimous. And obvious."
EXT. NDA 1
Eagle flies over red-glowing domes. Lightning strikes it.
INT. EAGLE PILOT SECTION
Shaking (from War Games)
ALAN: "Main Motor."
INT. BOARDROOM
NARDIN: "There's trouble."
DEPUTY: "What's happening?"
EXT. SPACE (SFX)
Eagle flies down, swaying.
INT. BOARDROOM
NARDIN: "It's out of control."
CHAIRMAN: "Contact Moonbase."
NARDIN (waving at other man): "It's too late, too late."
EXT. SPACE (SFX)
Eagle flies downwards.
INT. EAGLE PILOT SECTION
Astronauts shaken.
EXT. MOON SURFACE (SFX)
Eagle impacts with lunar surface.
Eagle slides along.
Eagle slides to a halt.
EXT. NDA 1
The domes fire lightning.
INT. BOARDROOM
NARDIN: "They've crashed."
DEPUTY: "The crew, what about the Meta Probe astronauts?"
Close on Chairman.
INT. INTENSIVE CARE
Close on Warren and Sparkman in isolation room.
END OF PRELUDE
((BREAKAWAY begins))
((Koenig's Eagle crashes; NDA 1 explodes))
INT. BOARDROOM
CHAIRMAN: "Well put those figures through the computer bank."
He puts the phone down. The deputy chairman enters.
DEPUTY: "Nothing from Koenig?"
CHAIRMAN: "Routine reports only. Simmonds is in constant touch and if the need arises he'll go to Moonbase Alpha himself."
DEPUTY (sat, opening report he brought in): "Virus infection. These reports from Doctor Russell make no sense."
CHAIRMAN: "Possibly not. But they have more up-to-date information than us. We can't risk the Meta Probe."
DEPUTY: "Huh, well why not, Mister Chairman? The Probe is a risk in itself."
CHAIRMAN: "Yes, of course it is. But we're in no position here to reach a decision either way. That's why Koenig was appointed in the first place. I have complete faith in his capabilities."
DEPUTY: "I wish I shared your confidence. Alright, alright, I retract that statement. But in my opinion, Koenig should order the launching of the Probe immediately, with the back up crew, whatever the consequences. A calculated risk, if you like. The virus trouble on Moonbase Alpha should not even be allowed into the considerations. Launch the Probe, it's the only decision that should be taken."
CHAIRMAN: "The correct decision will be taken. And taken by Commander Koenig."
The deputy chairman sighs.
END OF INTERVAL
((BREAKAWAY resumes (Act 3))
((Newscast ends))
INT. BOARDROOM
The Chairman wipes his hair. Pull back; all are sat at the table, before coffee & biscuits.
CHAIRMAN: "Gentlemen. As you are by now aware all contact with Moonbase Alpha has been lost." ((a man gives him a clipboard before going to his seat)) "During their last sporadic and very distorted transmission we were informed that Commissioner Simmonds had died. As far as we can gather, the injuries he sustained when the Moon went out of orbit were far more severe than at first suspected. There were many other casualties, but in view of the inferior radio reception and the possibility of error I've decided that no list will be made available for publication."
NARDIN: "Is there no chance of a rescue mission?"
CHAIRMAN: "Absolutely none."
DEPUTY: "Now, Mister Chairman.."
CHAIRMAN: "The speed of the Moon away from earth far exceeds the capabilities of any present day spacecraft."
DEPUTY: "Rescue from Moonbase Alpha was never even a possibility. Emergency Operation Exodus stood no chance. Now, now, we have to think of ourselves, it's a simple as that. All our present resources are urgently required here. On Earth."
NARDIN: "I thought the Earth's change of axis had settled, was now stable."
CHAIRMAN (standing, walking off): "It is, but states of emergency still exist. And will continue to do so. The rising sea levels are changing the coastlines as the polar caps melt. The new tide patterns have to be established. And the aftermath of the earthquakes alone will demand every man and machine from all services. Including ours." ((walks to model of Moon)) "Although Moonbase Alpha is officially lost, I personally will try to believe that survival is possible. And that the men and women will continue to live for years to come. It would be in its way the greatest probe into space that man has ever known. Moonbase Alpha. Facing whatever confronts them in the Universe. Surmounting all difficulties."
EXT. SPACE (SFX)
Blue planet in space ( from titles)
CHAIRMAN: "And meeting the dangers that could lie ahead."
Red planet horizon with Moon over (from titles).
END OF INTERVAL 2
((BREAKAWAY resumes; Meta signals detected))
Shown over series end credit scenes, footage of Moon approaching camera, and Space Brain approaching.
