Si vous demandez à Martin Landau ou à Barbara Bain, les héros de Cosmos 1999, s'ils croient aux OVNI ou aux extra-terrestres, ils se jetteront l'un à l'autre un regard géné.
Non, nous ne croyions pas du tout à ce genre d'histoires, explique Barbara, mais depuis que nous avons commencé à tourner ce feuilleton, il nous est arrivé un certaim nombre d'aventures étranges qui nous ont profondément troublés.
Le premier de ces événements, a eu lieu au mois d'aoüt 1974. Barbara et Martin rentraient d'un week-end passé chez des amis, les Parson, dans une propriété située à plus de 200 km de Los Angeles. C'est alors qu'ils ont aperçu une forme circulaire immobile à quelques métres au-dessus du sol, une étrangé lumiére verdàtre. Sans perdre son sang froid Martin fit un quart de tour et dirigea ses phares sur objet mystérieux. A sa grande surprise, la lumiére verdàtre disparut aussitöt et la forme s'évanouit dans la nuit. Le lendemain, Martin et Barbara apprirent qu'une cinquantaine de témoins avaient vu la soucoupe.
Peu de temps aprés il y eut l'épisode de "l'homme a la moustache grise" comme Barbara l'appelle elle-méme. Pendant plus d'un an, Martin Landau et Barbara Bain eurent la pénible impression d'étre suivis, épiés par un mystérieux personnage. "C'était un homme d'une quarantaine d'années, d'apparence banale. Tres difficile à décrire, à part la petite moustache grise."
Ils le retrouvaient partout ou ils allaient: à Londres, à la sortie des studios, à Sydney, en Australie, ou il savaient été présenté leur feuilleton, à New York, à Los Angelés.
Un jour, Barbara voulut en avoir le coeur net. Elle laisait ses courses dans un supermarché de Beverly Hills (Los Angeles) quand elle aperçut l'homme à la moustache grise, prés de la sortie. Il étaient en train de discuter avec la jeune femme de la caisse.
Barbara se dirigea vers lui. L'homme aussitöt disparut dans la rue.
"C'est curieux qu'il soit partisi vite, expliqua la caissiére. cet homme me demandait justement des renseignesments sur vous" Depuis ce jour, Barbara et Martin n'ont jamais revu l'homme a la moustache grise. Commes s'il s'était senti démasqué et avait voulu disparaitre...
Mais les phénoménes étranges n'ont pas cessé pour autant. Un soir, il y a six mois, Martin et Barbara regardaient un western à la T.V. Brusquement l'émission s'est arrétée. Sur l'écran un faisceau de lumiére jaune s'est mis à tourner lentement, comme un signal de radar. Cela a duré quelques minutes puis l'émission est redevenue normale. Le lendemain Martin Landau se renseigna auprés de ses voisins pour savoir s'ils avaient constaté un phénoméne semblable. Non, le film n'avait été interrompu par aucun incident!
Quelque se jours plus tard, le signal jaune réapparut au cours d'une émission policiére. Cette fois Martin Landau fit venir un réparateur qui examina l'appareil. Mais l'appareil n'avait rien, il était en parfait état de marche et ne présentait aucune anomalie. Depuis le méme phénoméne s'est reproduit deux fois.
"Tout se passe comme si des étres mystérieux cherchent entrer en communication avec nous, explique Martin Landau, mais nous ne comprenons pas pourquoi. Barbara et moi nous sommes des gens parfaitement normaux, sans histoiré."

Since Martin and Barbara made Space: 1999, they have had three very strange adventures ...
If you ask Martin Landau or Barbara Bain, the heroes of Space: 1999, if they believe in UFOs or aliens, they will throw each other an uncomfortable look.
No, we did not believe in those kind of stories at all, Barbara explains, but since we started shooting this series, we have had a number of strange adventures that have deeply troubled us.
The first of these events took place in August 1974. Barbara and Martin were returning from a weekend spent with friends, the Parsons, in a property located more than 200 km from Los Angeles. It was then that they perceived a circular form motionless a few meters above the ground, a strange greenish light. Without losing his composure Martin made a quarter turn and directed his headlights on the mysterious object. To his great surprise, the greenish light disappeared at once and the form vanished into the night. The next day, Martin and Barbara learned that about fifty witnesses had seen the saucer.
Shortly afterwards there was the episode of "the man with the grey moustache" as Barbara calls him herself. For more than a year, Martin Landau and Barbara Bain had the painful impression of being followed, watched by a mysterious character. "He was a man of about forty years, seemingly commonplace, very difficult to describe, except for the little grey moustache."
They could find him everywhere they went: in London, when they left the studios, in Sydney, Australia, where they went to show their series, in New York, in Los Angeles.
One day, Barbara wanted to be certain. She was shopping at a supermarket in Beverly Hills (Los Angeles) when she saw the man with the grey moustache near the exit. He was chatting with the young woman at the cash desk.
Barbara walked towards him. The man disappeared into the street.
"It was curious that he had gone quickly," explained the teller, "this man was just asking me for information about you." Since that day Barbara and Martin have never seen the man with the grey moustache. As if he had felt unmasked and wanted to disappear ...
But the strange phenomena have not ceased. One evening, six months ago, Martin and Barbara were watching a western at the T.V. Suddenly the show stopped. On the screen a beam of yellow light began to turn slowly, like a radar signal. It lasted a few minutes and then the programme returned to normal. The next day Martin Landau inquired from his neighbours whether they had noticed a similar phenomenon. No, the film had not been interrupted by any incident!
A few days later, the yellow signal reappeared during a police series. This time Martin Landau ordered a repairman to examine the television. But the set was in perfect working condition and showed no abnormality. Since then same phenomenon has been reproduced twice.
"Everything happens as if mysterious beings seek to communicate with us," explains Martin Landau, "but we do not understand why. Barbara and I are perfectly normal people, uneventful."
