Monster magazines

Monster and horror magazines were a popular genre since the late 1950s (when American television was reshowing classic 1930s and 1940s horror movies). Occasionally they strayed into science fiction film, and some contemporary magazines covered Space: 1999 around the time it launched. See also Monster Times.

Famous Monsters of Filmland

The most famous monster magazine, edited by Forrest J Ackerman and published by Warren, began in February 1958. Aimed at teenagers, it introduced readers to classic and contemporary horror films, and influenced many other horror and science fiction magazines. The art covers, like this one, were by Basil Gogos, much imitated by other horror magazines. It ran until 1983, but has been revived in different formats several times. This is issue 130, December 1976.

Quasimodo's Monster Magazine

A cheaply produced monster magazine from Mayfair Publications, which lasted 8 issues from March 1975 (as Monster World) to May 1976. The final issues, volume 2 number 8, had a parody comic strip.

World Of Horror

A short-lived British title, there were just 8 issues from 1974-1975. In issue 7 there was a nice article about the series (laid out rather better than the usual standards of the magazine). The promised continuation did not appear in issue 8, which was the final issue.
