Lovers who make war

Barbara Bain and Martin Landau adore each other, but not like everyone else

In a few days, on February 10, it will be exactly twenty years since they are married. One would think that they are the most united and the most peaceful couple in the world ...

United, yes. But peaceful. no! A thousand times no. At Barbara Bain and Martin Landau's home, every day is a storm. We have never seen two people love each other so much and at the same time argue so savagely.

First, each day begins with a fight. And for twenty years. Simply because Barbara gets up half an hour before Martin and begins to do her exercises at the foot of their bed.

It wakes him up and he screams. Every morning.

And every morning, she answers him: "My darling, I'm doing my gymnastics here, because in another room, I would not feel you near to me ..."

He is fiercely jealous. One day, three years ago, Martin burst onto a movie set where Barbara, dressed as Marlene Dietrich, was shooting a striptease scene. He was so furious that he challenged the director to a duel.

Another time he found that his wife spent too much time in his dressing room with his make-up artist, he punched a hole in the partition with a hand drill to spy on them. He was surprised in this ridiculous position and Barbara did not speak to him for a week.

Their first play: it was not performed

They do not forgive anything. All Hollywood still speaks of the embarrassment of the theatre director, where they had to make their career debut together. Martin went to see this man and explained to him that since he was the husband, it was his name that was to be at the top of the bill.

Barbara, the next day, also went to find the director and told him that if her name was not in the dominant position, she would refuse to play.

None of them wanted to give in. The play was not produced ...

The birth of their first child did not calm them. Still, Martin was touching. He spent eight hours in front of the door to Barbara's room, standing up, and he was going to kiss his child as soon as it was possible.

But when the baby was born, he started to scream like a devil: "The bitch! She promised me it would be a boy, what a liar! She did not even keep her word!"

Two days later, he was madly in love with his daughter.

"We even had arguments at the very beginning of our relationship," says Barbara.

"At the time, in 1956, we were very broke, we had five and a half dollars to spend a week on food for both of us.

"We had calculated that with this sum, you could buy enough to buy twenty-two individual meals. One for a week, at a rate of two per day and per person, we would have needed twenty-eight meals.

"So we drew lots at the beginning of the week to know which one would eat seven days and which would eat only four days.

"And we fought like crazy because we both tried to cheat ... to benefit the other ..."

It must be said that they had something to console themselves with: at a raffle, Martin had won ten times his weight in bottles of champagne.

So, the one who did not eat sipped while looking at the other ...
