Michael's journey into space

Newton and Earlestown Guardian, Wednesday 12th May 1976 p8

Local boy Michael Gallagher is over the moon about his lucky break!

For 16-years-old Michael of Troutbeck Avenue, Newton, has been picked for a major port in Space 1999. - a full length feature film currently being made following the success of the television series of the same name.

The budding young actor was discovered by the McKee Drama School in Liverpool, who sent photographs of Michael to their London agent.

As a result, along with hundreds of other hopefuls, he was at first asked to audition for a part in a Walt Disney film.

He succeeded in getting on a short-list of four, but when he returned to London for a second interview he was spotted by the producer of Space 1999 who snapped him up for the only child part in the film.

Michael left for London's Pinewood Studios last Monday, and filming is expected to take a fortnight.

Until Easter, Michael was a full time pupil at Ashton, Secondary School. He originally took up acting merely as a hobby and 18 months ago he joined the McKee Drama School, taking speech and drama lessons in two hour sessions every Friday evening. Since then he has gone from strength to strength.

He has already done a TV commercial, and recently ha won a distinction award in the Character Solo section at the Liverpool Drama Festival for his portrayal of a character from Jane Eyre

Hopefully his film debut will launch him into greater things still.

Michael appeared as Etrec in the episode (not film) The Mark of Archanon. His voice was dubbed.
