Storyboards

These are some of the special effects storyboards for the episode Dorzak.

Scene 1, slate library
Track into Moonbase Alpha.

Variations of this shot open many episodes; this view is identical to The Troubled Spirit and slightly different framing to Collision Course.

Scene 3, slate 1X
Very fast track thro stars in space sky. As if we are the light source i.e. spaceship

In the script, and on screen, this space shot is a close-up Big Screen view, but oddly not in this storyboard. The storyboard description suggests it's a point of view of the Croton ship, travelling faster than light. At some point they showed the scene as back projection on the Big Screen prop as intended, which makes the zooming stars odd.

Scene 5, slate 2X
Concentric waves of colored light pulsate from point source

Scene 7, slate 3X
Croton ship flies thro frame

Scene 8A, slate 4X
Hold Croton ship in frame and track with it.

Scene 9, slate -
Editor: use part of scene 8A.

Scene 8A would have been shown when Helena enters Command Center, but was not used. We do see the part of the shot in scene 9, which shows the Big Screen as the picture changes from the Croton ship to Sahala

Scene 14, slate 5X
High angle on Moonbase - Croton ship enters top frame as engines fire.

The moonbase model (a large photo here) is the modified Year 2 version, with boarding tubes on the launch pads. The rockets on the side are a little subtle in this shot, only really visible in high definition.

Scene 16, slate 6X
Croton ship lands on pad

The original design of the ship is a 3 stage rocket, while the actual model is an ornate design with Art Deco fins and curves, and the landing rockets as side tanks.

Scene 16A, slate 7X
Croton ship descends on pad to boarding tube level

Dorzak

Scene 16B, slate 8X
Boarding tube moves out to Croton ship

Scene 24, slate 11X
Start out of frame. Croton ship flies over camera. Star B/G

Start of the flashback sequence, as Sahala tells Alan "the trouble began when we were half way to Theselena, the planet to which Dorzak was exiled"

Dorzak

Scene 26, slate 9X
Very slow track towards Moon

Clea looks out the window as the Croton computer tells her "We are approaching a rogue asteroid. It is the former Moon from planet Earth." The Moon is a photograph taken by the Apollo 11 astronauts in 1969.

Scene 27, slate 10X
Croton ship enters frame and flies towards Moon.

The Croton computer concludes "Their culture is primitive. They represent no danger"

Scene 29A, slate 12X
Hold front and end of this take
Low angle on Croton ship featuring boarding tube. Ease into small set-up.

Maya, Tony and Helena wait for Sahala to be brought to the docking port. A static shot, the same as 16B above, but the instructions imply some sort of zoom, like scene 55 below. It's possible the editor used 16B here and discarded this shot.

Scene 44A, slate 13X
Establishing shot of Croton ship on launch pad.

The start of Act 3, as Tony calls Maya to tell her that Dorzak is innocent, and Maya turns off the forcefield. The shot is not used, but was probably similar to scene 60 below.

There are two further shots of the Croton ship on the launch pad. Scene 55 is a zoom into the ship, when Maya as Sahala exchanges Helena for Dorzak. Scene 60 at the start of Act 4 is a wider view of the pad, when Dorzak commands Maya to tell him how to transform. Both these shots would have been on an additional storyboard.
