There are two different Giano items, both created in 1966 by Italian designer Emma Gismondi Schweinberger (born 1934) for Artemide in Italy (she also designed the Ara table seen in living quarters). Schweinberger was the wife of Ernesto Gismondi, founder of Artemide. Both are cylinders with identical dimensions. The Giano Posacenere is an ashtray, while the Giano Vano Ruote is a telephone table.
The Giano floor ashtray ("Posacenere da terra Giano" in Italian). It is 40cm diameter and 40cm high (plus 5cm for the optional caster wheels). It is made of steel and ABS Marbon Cycolac.
It is regularly seen in Medical Centre, presumably as a general waste container and not specifically for smoking doctors or patients. At least in Another Time, Another Place, the four wheels are in place, as we see one knocked over during Alan's fight scene. It can also be glimpsed in Koenig's quarters in Breakaway.
The Giano vano is a bedside or telephone table. It is 40cm diameter and 40cm high (plus 5cm for the optional caster wheels). It is made of ABS Marbon Cycolac.
