The distinctive Main Mission desk lamp is the Sorella bedside lamp, designed by Rodolfo Bonetto (1929-1991) and produced by Guzzini in 1972. The lamp is 30.5 cm high and made from ABS (Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, the same hard plastic used for Lego bricks). It takes a 40W E17 bulb. It fulfils it's original purpose in Force Of Life, alongside Zoref's bed, and in Koenig's quarters in The Lambda Factor. In the second series, it is occasionally seen in the Eagle passenger module.
The Sorella lamp can also be seen in the 1979 James Bond movie Moonraker, seen in Drax's space station. It can also be seen in the Dr Who serial The Invisible Enemy, 1977, which also features a Gaudi chair and two Pileo lamps.
The electrical lead should be fed through the hole in the back, but in Space: 1999 it was fed up through the desks into the base of the Sorella.
A new version was made by Nemo Cassina in 2012, with a matte finish (instead of glossy) and slightly different hood shape. The box featured a picture of Zienia Merton in Space: 1999 at a desk with the original lamp.
The power cable is in the base of the lamp.
