He pauses in his speech for freshment - a drinking vessel
appears in his hand, he drinks and the vessel vanishes.
MAGUS
(resuming)
However, I assure you that I am
what you would call the only
genuine article.
KOENIG
You're like a Renaissance
painter's idea of the original
article, I'll give you that.
MAGUS
Artists have their insights.
But let us discuss these
matters in a civilised manner
- over a meal.
He waves a hand and a buffet table magically appears
before them - strewn with roast meats, bowls of fruit,
golden goblets. There is a gasp from some of the
Alphans which KOENIG's line deliberately stamps on.
KOENIG
That went out with Nero.
Too harsh -
not enough
awe!
Mixture of feelings?
Why should I doubt him this strongly?
He's done nothing to threaten us as yet?
MAGUS
With Messalina, as a matter of
fact. The trouble was no one
could ever be quite sure whose
goblet had the poison in it.
But you're right - it is somewhat
old-fashioned.
Another wave of his hand and the whole thing vanishes.
It is replaced by a beautiful GIRL in cute costume bearing
a tray of glasses filled with golden fluid. Her attitude
is like that of girls at some kind of sales promotion.
There is a rhubarb of ad-libbed "Heys!" and whistles from
the men.
MAGUS
Pure protein. Tastes like
nectar and one glassful is
food for a month.
The men smile appreciatively at the GIRL as she advances
on them, offering the fluid. One or two of the men make
to sample it. KOENIG still smiles, but his line is sharp.
