Saturday Scene competition

On Saturday 29 January 1977, Landau and Bain appeared on the LWT morning show Saturday Scene to promote the show, with host Sally James (before a repeat of Missing Link later that morning). From the letter, it was filmed on Friday afternoon. It was only shown in the London area. The show ran an art competition, which attracted an impressive 11,000 entries, sorted into age categories. The prizes were original props from the show- a Medical bag (one of several decorated film canisters), and a laser rifle.

The letter was sent to Pamela Godfrey, who was in charge of publicity for the series on behalf of Dennis Davidson Associates Ltd (see the Mike Jackson ATV interviews). She sent a covering letter, dated 9th February 1977, proposing a return visit to the show, and another show, Whose Baby, an LWT game show hosted by Leslie Crowther in which celebrity children appeared and the panellists guessed their parents.

Dear Barbara and Martin,

Many thanks for your continued interest in our Space 1999 competition. As I told Pam, and Jerry Anderson when he phoned me, the response, to put it politely, has been ridiculous!

To date we have had over 11,000 entries, and to be honest to say that we have picked the best 24 in each category would be stretching our work force here in the office to the limit! So we have selected the best entries out of the first 2,000 that arrived in the post and have had to throw the others away, as we could hardly move in the office!

I would appreciate it if you would ring me as soon as possible on 261-3594, with the name of a winner for the medical bag and another winner for the lazer gun. We have kept copies of the beat 24 of each category here just in case something happens to the originals.

We really enjoyed having you here for the day and the reaction certainly warranted the time you spent with us on that Friday afternoon. The ratings were excellent.

I hope very much that we will be able to get together again before you return to the States in June.

With best wishes,

Mike Smith

Dear Barbara & Martin,

I enclose the competition entries (final selection!) for you to choose the most appropriate.

Many thanks for your co-operation with this programme. Mike Smith would like you to make a return appearance before you finally leave for America, perhaps you could let me know what you feel about this.

Also, did you have any further thoughts on the 'Who's Baby show I spoke to Martin about. If you let me know your decision I will pass it on to Thames Television.

Kind personal regards,

Pamela Godfrey
