Space 1999: The Return To Television

Science fiction has always been and will always be a subject that fascinates and captivates young and old alike. Opportunities to watch series dedicated to this subject on our screens are rare, as they are not easy to obtain. However, with the end of the series Battlestar Galactica, RTP has arranged for its replacement with another series in the same genre, one that is already familiar to us: Space: 1999, this time with a batch of 24 new episodes. Familiar faces, new situations, exciting adventures... this is what we can expect to see starting March 19th.

What is this new series of space adventures about?

The belief that the Moon can, one day, it may be used as a basis for scientific investigations of the infinite universe and, if necessary, also become the first outpost for the defence of Earth against threats.

Dangers and threats from other planets and other solar systems were the themes that inspired this new series.

Very little can happen in a quarter of a century, but the end of the 1900s is not distant enough to consider the way people lived very different from how they live today.

Space: 1999 is therefore a futuristic science fiction story, based in the present day, where people are not super-evolved humans of some kind.

Beautiful women experiencing exciting situations and adventures in an atmosphere filled with emotion and mystery...

The future is unknown, when the world has changed beyond recognition, but they are indeed men and women identifiable with our time. Their appearance and emotions are the same as in the present day. Viewers will therefore identify with the characters.

Dramatically leaping into the future, the characters find themselves alone on the Moon, which is ravaged by violent explosions caused by the storage of nuclear waste from Earth. The Moon is diverted from its orbit, inexorably moving away from Earth, towards terrifying and unknown places.

The world of the infinite universe. The Moon, therefore, became a solitary planet wandering aimlessly through space. But with the gravitational force of other planets and stars, there is always the possibility of finding a new home, with gravity and an atmosphere similar to Earth's, that could offer living conditions for the inhabitants of the lunar colony.

This is the theme that unfolds throughout the series: the search for a new place to live, far from the artificial atmosphere of the Moon.

As new ideas for filming emerged, those involved increasingly understood the number of mysteries existing in outer space, which are beyond human comprehension. Time, as we know, means nothing and distance is incomprehensible; therefore, it is perfectly conceivable that life exists on other planets, with civilizations and mentalities millions of years ahead of Earth. The possibilities of this fact being true are as limited as space itself.

The Moon having been diverted from its orbit, and wandering aimlessly through space, the main objective of the colony that inhabits it is to find a new place to live, far from the artificial atmosphere of the Moon.
