This is the RCA press release for the Original Television Soundtrack Recording, dated 22nd March 1976. It spells Barry Gray's surname wrongly. This copy was in Martin Landau's personal archives. RCA's Mike Berniker (1935-2008) won 9 Grammy Awards, and was particularly associated with the early career of Barbra Streisand.
RCA Releasing Soundtrack from Hit TV Series Space: 1999
RCA Records is releasing an album of music from the soundtrack of the smash hit television series, Space: 1999, in March.
The show, starring Martin Landau and Barbara Bain, has been one of the most successful syndicated features ever to appear on TV. Produced by Independent Television Corp., the science fiction series has been seen this season on 155 independent stations and has been renewed for even more stations in 1976-77. It consistently has drawn some of the best ratings of the seasons.
The score from which the soundtrack music is taken was composed by Barry Grey.
Announcement was made by Mike Berniker, Division Vice President, Popular Artists and Repertoire, who said: "Space: 1999 is being seen by millions and millions of persons weekly, and we feel an album featuring the best music from its exciting score should be most successful based on the show's wide acceptance."
In the series, in 1999, the moon is blasted out of earth's orbit. On it are 300 men and women from all nations of Earth, originally based there to man an early- warning defense system and to repel invaders.
With Moonbase Alpha intact, the moon careens inexorably away from Earth. It can never return, and its inhabitants have but one goal, to find a compatible planet on which to settle.
Self-sustaining, the base is able to maintain survival conditions. Food, air and water recycling installations are powered with atomic and solar energy. All systems necessary for the life functions of the people, and the computer- governed operations of the complex machinery, are operative-- making the runaway moon totally self-supporting.
Thus, the fateful journey through the incredible vastness of space has begun. On their adventures, the explorers match wits and weapons with the fantastic life forms found through- out the galaxies, and with. the awesome forces of the universe itself. The Barry Grey music complements the on-going action. RCA's album contains the choice music from the first 24 episodes of the series.
