1975 Landau/Bain Press Itinerary

This was the press itinerary for the Landaus in July and August 1975, just before Space: 1999 aired in September 1975. All these documents are from Martin Landau's archives.

The schedule was prepared by Jay Bernstein Public Relations of Los Angeles. Bernstein (1937-2006) was a celebrated Hollywood publicist who founded his own agency in 1962. From 1975 he also worked as a manager, for actors such as Sammy Davis Jnr and Farrah Fawcett, and later a producer of TV series such as Bring 'Em back Alive and various Mike Hammer series with Stacey Keach. His autobiography, Starmaker, was published in 2011.

The itinerary starts with 80 phone calls over 5 days, to local press in 40 major US cities.

Dinah! was a daytime variety talk show hosted by Dinah Shore, each 90 minutes long. It ran from 1974 to 1980. This edition, recorded on 23 July, was aired on 19 August, and would also feature Rudi Gernreich. No other talk shows are mentioned, but they would also do the Merv Griffin Show, also aired 19 August, The Tonight Show with guest presenter McLean Stevenson on 29 August, and later in November an entire week as co-hosts of the Mike Douglas Show (see US publicity).

The "promo spots" for Saturday 26 July include the series promotional films with the Landaus in 1970s suits, and the spots for each US station, this time with the Landaus in uniform. The last document, "Tentative Schedule", is prepared for filming these promos on Saturday 26 July, with morning and afternoon video taping (VTR) plus open-ended overtime (OT). On the previous Wednesday 23rd, just before filming Dinah!, there was a pre-production meeting.

KHJ-TV was the Los Angeles station showing Space: 1999. The Landaus would also visit the station on Monday 14th July, immediately after their first morning of phone calls, and do a week of interviews with the Los Angeles press organised by KHJ, which seem to be completely separate to the later week organised by Bernstein.

The city trips were San Francisco, Portland, Chicago, Miami, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Boston and New York, lasting 16 days. There were weekend rest days in Chicago and New York, where the Landaus had friends and family.
