The Catacombs The Production Guide
Episode Order
by Martin Willey

The episodes of Space: 1999 did not have a strict order, apart from the first episode of each series. The TV market at the time preferred individual self-contained episodes, which allowed companies to shuffle new episodes and repeats, while ITC saved money by creating a limited number of film prints that would circulate between stations.

Production Order

In production, episodes were assigned production numbers, which is the order that they started filming. This is somewhat complicated by re-shoots, which meant several episodes had significant sequences filmed weeks or months later (Breakaway, Missing Link, The Last Enemy and Space Brain). The last episode to be completed was episode 20, Space Brain.

Most later releases (DVD, Blu-ray) use this order. There are minor set and cast changes through the series which make more sense in this order.

This is an ITC document with a recommended broadcast order, from Martin Landau's archives.

The order was created to introduce stronger episodes early in the run, to get audiences interested, and later mix weaker and stronger episodes so they wouldn't lose interest. Notably a number of later episodes get moved to the front, while early episodes are shifted back.

The UK stations (such as ATV in Birmingham and LWT in London) follow it fairly closely, especially at the start. In the US, the major markets seem to be influenced by it (New York, Los Angeles), but the nature of the US market made it too difficult to follow.

Television stations received the episodes on 16mm film reels (later on videotape), which were sent from station to station (a process called "bicycling"). Each station did not get a full set of episodes; less important stations got individual episodes in random order from other stations. In the UK, many ITV stations ran the series at the same timeslot (7pm Thursday) and could share the same feed, but later in the run they shifted timeslots and episode orders were shuffled by the same bicycling of film reels between stations.
