Script To Screen: Earthbound

Script To Screen

After six days of shooting, mostly in the spaceship set on M stage, the crew moved back to L stage for Main Mission scenes on Monday 25th March, and would continue to film there for six days, finishing on Monday 1st April. Wednesday was the 9th day of shooting, and the second on the Main Mission set. It was second extended day for this episode (the first was Thursday 21st March, when the Eagle scenes were filmed after the spaceship scenes).

On Monday and Tuesday they had got through most of the early scenes in Main Mission. Today they will press on with other Main Mission/office scenes. This is an ambitious schedule, and indeed it would take three more days after this one to finish them.

Earthbound

They start the day by finishing scene 3, the lengthy scene in Main Mission when they detect the powered object. Only Simmonds and all the Main Mission staff are present; both Koenig and Bergman are a little later, and Helena is much later. Presumably these are reaction shots (not used in the final edit).

Earthbound

The other scene to complete is 36, which starts with Simmonds looking out the window ("I hope they know what they're doing out there.") Koenig, Helena and Bergman aren't present, and this is likely more reaction shots.

Earthbound Earthbound

The first new scene is 57. Koenig goes to Kano: "Kano. I want Computer programmed to select one person from Alpha to return to Earth. The answer's to be confidential and in code." In the script, Koenig gives Kano a piece of paper, presumably the criteria that the computer should use. The script specifies a "survival list" which is this piece of paper, but the scene is filmed without it. Bergman then appears on a screen to call Koenig back to the spaceship.

Next is scene 60. Koenig returns from the ship, dejected, and Alan tries to cheer him up by pointing the direction of Earth ("it's thataway"). They then watch the big screen, showing the ship and the efforts inside to revive Helena. Mathias calls him back. The call sheet is uncertain whether Mathias will appear on screen A at the front of Main Mission, or the desk monitor- they used screen A, while in scene 57, they put Bergman on the desk monitor.

Earthbound

Estimated for 11:30am, Barbara Bain and Christopher Lee arrive on set. They now film scene 51A, as Helena leads the Kaldorians through Main Mission. They will film the first part of this sequence, scene 51 in the command office, later; the last part, between Simmonds and Koenig, is scene 51B and is scheduled for today, but will be filmed on Thursday.

Earthbound Earthbound Earthbound

We skip forward to scene 63, the lengthy scene when Koenig sees Kano's list has 3 names. Privately, Simmonds demands he takes the place, but is interrupted as Helena, Zantor and Bergman arrive. Simmonds steals Koenig's commlock. The script and call sheet specifies Koenig has a commlock stand (like Bergman uses in Black Sun), but there has never been one on his desk before, and he just places it on the top of the desk.

Earthbound

Listed next is scene 65. Koenig says goodbye to Zantor, tells Kano to get computer to make the final choice, and tells Paul to start the countdown. At this point, we know the schedule was shuffled, because this scene was filmed the next day, on Thursday. They had four Kaldorians in costume and make-up, waiting for several other scenes to be filmed before they could return. So we skip to their big scene, 51.

Earthbound Earthbound

In scene 51, Zantor and the Kaldorians present the eggs to the Alphans. This scene had been scheduled later because it was in the command office set, and they had intended to concentrate on the Main Mission set first before they moved to it. This is the last scene for the Kaldorians apart from Zantor; all their later scenes, in the spaceship, have already been filmed.

Note the eggs are "breakaway" props, because in scene 51B, to be filmed on Thursday, Simmonds will toss his up, and it will fall and break on the floor (as described in the script).

Earthbound

We don't know what order the next scenes were filmed in, but also filmed today was the opening scene in the command office, scene 2. "I am shocked that we have not discussed a serious attempt to locate Earth and return there."

Earthbound

Scene 67 was also filmed, as Koenig discovers his commlock was switched. Parts of this were completed on Thursday.

Earthbound

In scenes 71 to 75, they watch Simmonds on the Big Screen, and as the light dims as the power is taken. Scene 75 was completed on Thursday, which continued with scene 77, when they call for Zantor.

On Wednesday or Thursday, the heads of ATV came to visit the production. The visit is not mentioned on the call sheets for these days.

Many scenes were scheduled for today but filmed over the next three days.

Earthbound

Scene 91 features a command conference where they are examining a diagram. The prop is described as "Bergman's drawing of device"; in the script it is Bergman's plan of the suspended animation caskets, so the Alphans can introduce the technology. The scene was a standby set on Thursday, but probably filmed on Monday 1st April.
