Script To Screen: Another Time, Another Place

Script To Screen

In Another Time, Another Place the Moon travels through a space warp. Here is the climax of act one, as they discover they are back in Earth's solar system. First, here are the pages from the shooting script, dated 20th March 1974. Koenig's line about living his life again is a little too obvious. There are 11 planets in Earth's solar system (anticipating Ultra and other planets being discovered). These lines were changed in blue page revisions on 25th March.

BERGMAN

Well, we travelled way beyond
the speed of light. How far
beyond we have no means of
telling. And what happens to
matter beyond the speed of light
we have no means of knowing.

KOENIG

I used to be fascinated with
the thought that if I could
travel faster than light I'd
get younger, catch up on
myself. I'd be able to look
back on the life I'd just lived -
and live it again.

They are interrupted by an excited shout from KANO
who appears on the steps, runs down and hands a
read-out to KOENIG.

KANO

Commander!

KOENIG looks at it and runs into Main Mission.
The others follow him to the console.

CARTER

(quietly)

Can't be!

SANDRA

(intense)

We have checked and rechecked
...there is no mistake.

MORROW

Everything confirms. All
eleven planets check out....

KOENIG

Paul....aim long range scanner
at the third planet.

ON BIG SCREEN. SFX.

The image of the planet zooms into sharper focus.

KOENIG

Kano, get computer to assess
data on third planet.

COMPUTER (V.O.)

Third planet. Distance from
sun ninety-three million miles.
Diameter 7926 miles. Axial
rotation 23 hours 56 minutes.

KOENIG

Compare third planet to third
planet of our own solar system.

COMPUTER (V.O.)

Question illogical. Third
planet is the third planet of
our solar system. Planet's
name is Earth.

SILENT PAUSE

ON BIG SCREEN. SFX.

The planet - Earth...the people in Main Mission
stare at the beautiful planet. A miracle bas
happened...They have come home. The atmosphere is
very quiet, very still.

COMPUTER (V.O.) (Cont'd.)

Moon velocity easing.
Gravitational pull confirms
Moon going into Earth orbit.

FADE OUT:

On the 25th March, just five days later, many of the early pages of the shooting script were revised (and printed on blue paper, so it would be obvious that everyone was used the updated version of the script). There are now 9 planets instead of 11.

BERGMAN

We appear to have travelled
beyond the speed of light. That
means time would have been affected.
Regina would be reliving a past life,
or a future life... but living it
now.

Both KOENIG and HELENA pick up on the word now.

They are interrupted by an excited shout from KANO
who appears on the steps, runs down and hands a
read-out to KOENIG.

KANO

Commander!

KOENIG looks at it and walks quickly back into Main
Mission.

The others follow him to the console. Beat while
KOENIG looks at the screen.

KOENIG

You've checked all this?

MORROW

It checks out. Computer confirms
there are nine planets revolving
round that sun.

KOENIG

(slowly)

Nine planets... Paul... aim
long range scanner at the
third planet.

ON BIG SCREEN. SFX.

The image of the planet zooms into sharper focus.

KOENIG

(growing excitement)

Kano, get computer to assess
data on third planet.

COMPUTER (V.O.)

Third planet. Distance from
sun ninety-three million miles.
Diameter 7926 miles. Axial
rotation 23 hours 56 minutes.
