The production moved into the studio sets on stage "M" on Tuesday 1st October 1974. They filmed first "mist area one", in which the Alphans enter the mist, and the "clearing" where Bergman, Kano and Carter camp (night-time scenes only, day time was an exterior shot). They also intended to film "mist area two" by the cave entrance, into which the cave people are forced, They didn't get to these shots, so they were carried over to Wednesday.
On Wednesday 2nd October they did the "mist area two" shots, and then moved into the main cave set, which they would film for 5 days, until Tuesday 8th.
Martin Landau wrote some comments on the reverse of these sheets, described below.
The "mist area two" set, filmed on Wednesday 2nd October.
The cave. The stage directions for scene 161 read: "The cave is a vast vaulted boulder strewn cavern on different levels with a maze of tunnels and minor caves leading off it. In a dominant position in the cave the CAVE CHIEF has his lair; his fire, his pile of skins; his weapons, his belongings and his CAVE WIFE. The walls around his lair are decorated with paintings on the rock. In various parts of the cavern other fires reveal where other cave families live. The cavern is illuminated only by the flickering flames from these fires. Faint daylight spilling through a tunnel reveals the way in. CAVE PEOPLE sit around the fires." This cave was a repainted version of the ice cave from Death's Other Dominion.
The cave walls have paintings of animals, which the call sheet notes are "M.F's etchings on wall." (MF being Michael Ford, assistant art director, who would later win two Oscars for set direction (Raiders of the Lost Ark, 1981, and Titanic, 1997), plus nominations for Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi
The action includes the fight between the cave chief and spearman, doubled by stuntmen Alf Joint and Eddie Stacey. They will do similar stunts in the following episode, End of Eternity, with Alf Joint as Balor and Stacey as a guard. Note the "rock" that spearman picks up at one point to strike Koenig is a sponge. Later, when Sandra hits Koenig on the head with a rock (scenes 231-233), that is also a sponge.

KEN BAKER
Assistant Director
On the reverse of the call sheet, Martin Landau wrote out a 14-point rant, mentioning the "rain incident" (that most of Friday shooting was abandoned due to rain), plus some other "incidents" which he was unhappy with, the details of which are impossible to know. "9 - But when it hurts the look of the show - or the 'health' of the show - I do get upset - + angry."
He runs out of space and writes the last 2 points at the top of the page.
The cave set was based on the ice cave set from Death's Other Dominion, which was made with foamed urea formaldehyde (UFFI, which is normally used to make foam insulation in houses, see Gerry Anderson account). This gave off formaldehyde fumes, which irritated some members of the crew (and is now known to be a carcinogen). Landau had complained and insisted on a doctor inspecting the set in that episode; he was not happy to be back on the set.
Point 3 is obscure, as are some of the later points. The rest of the points indicate that originally there were 14 cave people, but this got cut to 12 (Koenig, Helena, Spearman, 5 men and 4 women). The rescue party is 9 (Koenig, Helena, Co-pilot, guard, orderly and 2 nurses, Alan and Sandra). The original Eagle had 7 (one of whom was Sandos)- so the total should have been 13 cave people (6 original, 7 rescuers).
Landau seems to be saying that there should have been more people on screen (point 12, "We should have 14 bodies in + out of uniform - period"). He also may be suggesting that Oliver Cotton (Spearman) should have been introduced in uniform in the rescue party. In fact, Oliver Cotton never appears in Alphan uniform- he isn't in Medical in the epilogue either.
There are continuity issues with the cast which Landau doesn't mention, with most of the rescue party not being cave people (Colin Rix, Chris Williams, Kathy Mallory and Glenda Allen only appear in uniform, and going into the mist Glenda Allen is replaced by Fran Hunter).
