Script To Screen: War Games

Script To Screen

Monday 28th October required two units filming simultaneously, the main unit of director Charles Crichton, and a second unit led by director Ray Austin filming stunt and inserts scenes for this and earlier episodes.

War Games

Day 3 of Main Mission filming, starting with completing this scene, 59D, as Koenig tells most of the Main Mission staff to evacuate, including Bergman.

War Games

When Carter blows up the alien bomber, Koenig and Sandra are thrown to the floor. This is stuntman Eddie Stacey and an unknown stuntwomen taking the fall. A nurse, "Sister Seager", was on stand-by for the stunts, explosions and falling debris.

War Games

In an ambitious schedule, they only got to scene 94, with Koenig and Sandra alone in Main Mission after Carter blows up the alien bomber.

The second unit was directed by Ray Austin, who had originally directed Collision Course (in August) and the previous episode, End of Eternity (October).

End Of Eternity

The first shot is stuntman Alf Joint, playing Balor, being sucked out the airlock into space at the end of End of Eternity. This is the "tilting airlock", actually an airlock set built vertically, with a camera at the top pointing downwards. The stuntmen fall through the set, landing on crash boxes covered with black velvet.

War Games

Stuntman Colin Skeaping falls through the tllting airlock for War Games. We also see yellow sleeved Paul Weston falling. Martin Grace, as a guard, was also filmed, but that shot was not used in the episode. There are also scenes of the stuntmen been pulled through a wrecked corridor (a conventional horizontal corridor, dressed with hanging wires and fallen communications post). Those shots were filmed a few days later, on 31st October, with Les Crawford as the guard in place of Martin Grace.

The other shots are inserts filmed on the Main Mission and office sets while the main unit was on lunch break.

First are a couple of shots of the desk hatch. This is seem being pressed by Paul Morrow in several episodes, but it seems originally it was filmed in medium shot. The editor would have asked for more dramatic close-ups, which required the prop department to make a more convincing hatch. Obviously continuity wasn't a big concern for the crew, filming the same hatch with different labels and functions.

End Of Eternity

First is this close-up of the desk hatch being pressed from End of Eternity. This isn't Prentis Hancock's hand, it's probably a member of the film crew.

Collision Course Collision Course Collision Course

Immediately after the "Vacuum" version of the hatch, they redressed it for an earlier episode, Collision Course, with an inner sliding hatch and "Safe" and "Armed" labels.

These shots obviously impressed the crew, who then ordered a further insert for the current episode, War Games, with yet another variation of the hatch, filmed on Friday 8th November.

End Of Eternity

Close ups of the asteroid rock being disintegrated from End of Eternity. The original sequence with Koenig and Bergman had been filmed on Thursday 10th October; the actors were not present for these new shots, so they were close-ups only. The editor, Dave Lane, would have been editing the episode, and must have wanted new shots for this sequence.
