Thursday 31st October 1974 was an extended day, filming on three different stages (there would be another extended day a week later, on 7th November).
Today includes all the action sequences in Medical, packed with casualties. The room is evacuated, but Mathias is sucked out through the window. The previous day, 30th October, they had filmed the scenes in Medical before the chaos.
Nurse Judith Hepburn and Barbara Bain attend the wounds of Martin Grace. Behind, nurse Jeannie Galston is attending to another patient.
John Clifford is holding out his arm on the left. On the right in the foreground bed, "first Alphan" Tony Goodall, with Martin Grace at the foot of his bed. The "second Alphan", Robert Atiko is attending to a patient by the cracked window (he was the Alphan who called it out).
Mathias shields "casualty 1" (Carol Dee) from the dust. According to the make-up instructions, both casualties are "decompressed". Dee's face looks covered in frost. Dee was also a patient in Space Brain, but was cut from the episode.
In the episode, Prentis Hancock pushes out "Casualty 1" (Carol Dee), but in the publicity shot it is "Casualty 2" Richard Adams. Adams doesn't have the same decompression make-up, just a torn sleeve. Koenig helps a pilot with a bandaged head; this is probably Uffe Neumann who we see earlier in Main Mission.
Stuntman Paul Weston doubles as Dr Mathias as he dives out the window. He will later shoot more scenes of being sucked into space as another Alphan.
They also filmed the scenes in the corridor outside Medical. Unusually the main Medical set and this corridor were built alongside each other, and filmed with the same cast. Bottom left is Martin Grace, Barbara Bain, Landau and Prentis Hancock in foreground. Behind is Roy Everson (technician looking down), Robert Atiko supporting a nurse at the far end, and the man on the right is Paul Kirby.
The previous day they had filmed this corridor scene of Alphans watching Koenig on the communications post; the cast here are also the cast in Medical. Tony Goodall is in front, with hand on hip. It looks like Trevor Ainsley left, behind Goodall. Roy Everson can be seen looking over nurse Jeannie Galston, with Robert Atiko on her other side. The other Alphans are all also visible in Medical.
The crew then moved onto stage H for some corridor scenes, as stuntmen Paul Weston, Colin Skeaping and Les Crawford are pulled by explosive decompression. The scenes of them falling out the airlock had been filmed a few days earlier, on 28th October. In those scenes, the guard had been Martin Grace, but here he is replaced by Crawford.
Also filmed was the moonbuggy scene, described here.
The crew moves again, to stage M, for scenes in the Eagle. First we have Koenig and Helena leaving the Eagle when they first land on the planet.
We then have another scene in the passenger module, busy with Alphans as they evacuate. Like the moonbuggy scene, this was cut. Filming spilled over to the following day. 1st November, after which they moved to the Eagle command module, starting with the preceding scene, which survives in the episode.
154 INT. EAGLE COMMAND MODULE. 154
MORROW is at the controls. BERGMAN is in silent
thought.
MORROW
A penny for them?
BERGMAN
Just wondering ... wondering if
there's any future at all.
MORROW nods and turns back to the controls.
155 INT. EAGLE PASSENGER MODULE. 155
The ALPHANS are sleeping, reading, playing chess -
passing the time whilst travelling. In the front
seats, SANDRA, TANYA and KANO and another MAIN
MISSION STAFF are playing cards.
SANDRA holds her cards close to her chest a moment and
thinks
SANDRA
Christopher Columbus...
I wonder what he thought he
would find?
No-one wants to conjecture aloud. They go back to the
cards.
