Living Quarters: Bergman's LQ12

Bergman's quarters are different from the standard design, with a large work bench and a computer bank panel. The designation on the communications post is "LQ12". We see the exterior door in Space Brain, where the sign reads "Living Unit 14". The room is seen in Matter Of Life And Death, Black Sun, Ring Around The Moon, Alpha Child, and Dragon's Domain (the last episode being a clip from earlier in the series).

The room is unusually cluttered. Wall shelves are filled with junk. There are two vivariums against the far wall, Victor's mysterious glass spheres, and an unpainted Airfix Saturn V model. Perhaps one of his hobbies is model making: in Black Sun he has a fairly accurate model of Moonbase Alpha. There are also astronomical posters and photos on the walls and noticeboards. The sleeping area is not delimited by a shelf unit as in the standard living quarters.

Black Sun

The work bench takes up much of the central area of the room. Note the communications post beyond with the LQ12 designation.

Among the items on the Bergman's lab bench are an unpainted Airfix Saturn V model, a microscope, an astrolabe, and a Tizio adjustable lamp (which later appeared on Koenig's Command Center desk in early Year 2 episodes).

Ring Around The Moon

The vivariums - glass enclosed habitats, used for keeping plants and possibly animals such as reptiles, amphibians or insects. There is also a solar system map, Z-27 Etagere shelves with rocks (some may the same rocks as in the Command Office), and a plastic "ring a date" calendar.

Matter Of Life And Death

There is an abstract sculpture which is often seen in LQ12. The prop appeared in the 1969 James Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service, in Blofeld's clinic. Perhaps Bergman worked for Blofeld in the clinic's lab, adjacent to this lobby.

Alpha Child

This view shows one of the vivariums. The print over them is Ludek Pesek's painting of Mars as seen from Deimos. There are 5 different paintings by Pesek on the walls (see details). The shelf with minerals is a Z-27 Etagere.

Alpha Child

This is also Victor's sleeping quarters. A view of the contoured bed, almost hidden in the clutter.

Black Sun

There are astronomical pictures on the walls and drawing boards for equations.

Bergman has his own personal computer bank. The wall screen alongside is the same design as in the Command Office. The configuration of computer panels changes between episodes.

Black Sun

Note the cluttered shelves (Bisterfeld + Weiss wall shelves, commonly seen in Medical)

Jackie sits at a Stadio 120 desk, with a Lucciola lamp. By the wall we can see an Ara table with orange Hampa-Pak picnic trays and a moon globe on top. On the foreground desk, we see the green pipe (in white in this episode).

Alpha Child

Towards the front door. Note another vivarium to the right. On the noticeboard to the left are pictures of Saturn and other planets. On the desk is a ball-and-stick molecular model (white is hydrogen, black is carbon, blue is nitrogen, red is oxygen, dark green is an alkaline earth metals such as calcium or magnesium). The ball-and-stick models are also seen in Helena's office and Care Unit 3.
In this shot from Alpha Child, the entrance door has the control panel on the right; previously it was always on the left. The art prints that were on the walls in earlier episodes have been removed.

Ring Around The Moon

On the left is Victor's telescope (also seen in Another Time, Another Place). There are books piled on the floor, and another astrolabe.

Matter Of Life And Death

The print on the wall (showing the phases of the Moon) appears in both Matter Of Life And Death, Black Sun, and Ring Around The Moon, but not the other episodes. It also appears in Recreation Center in One Moment Of Humanity. The print is an illustration from a 17th century astronomical atlas, Harmonia Macrocosmica, by Andreas Cellarius, published in Amsterdam in 1660 (more details). Thanks to Marcus Lindroos for identification.

Matter Of Life And Death

Notice the diploma over Koenig's shoulder, only seen in Matter Of Life And Death. According to the script, this is a Nobel Prize diploma for Physics. The image of Alfred Nobel is bottom left; the diploma is in Swedish; modern diplomas have an illustration customised for the award. Later a Ludek Pesek art print appears here.

Matter Of Life And Death

In Matter Of Life And Death, we briefly see some plans on the wall: they are titled "Photon Drive". It is also present in Black Sun (no detail can be seen).

Space Brain

In Space Brain we see Bergman emerge from his quarters. The door sign reads "Living Unit 14".

Plan

Unlike the standard layout living quarters, there are no curved corners. There isn't a second door for a bathroom, or windows to the lunar surface, although we do not see one wall of the room. Unusually there are 2 computer banks. The configuration of the panels shown here is Black Sun; it differs in other episodes, but we don't clearly see all panels.

The plan shows the two positions of the communications post, in Matter Of Life And Death (lower in this plan) and Black Sun (higher). The post is not visible in the other 2 episodes.
