He found fame as a regular in Z Cars (1962-1970); I Claudius (1976) gave him acting credibility. Roles in The Avengers (1967), Randall and Hopkirk Deceased (1969), Arthur Of The Britons (regular, 1972), Into Infinity (1976), Blakes 7 (1978), Blackadder (1983), Dr Who (1986), John Silver's Return to Treasure Island (star, 1986). Films include Flash Gordon (1980), Henry V (1989), Robin Hood, Prince Of Thieves (1991), Hamlet (1996), Star Wars The Phantom Menace (1999). He also appeared in stage musicals: Cats (1985) and Metropolis (1989), Hard Times (2000).
