Actor, mountaineer and writer. He combined careers for In The Steps Of George Mallory (1990) when he climbed Everest. He is the oldest man to have walked to the North Pole (in 1999). Married to Hildegard Neil (in 1978), who appeared in Devil's Planet. His booming voice is well known in the UK and much in demand (and imitated) for TV and radio links and comedy shows. His voice is even available for satnav directions.
He found fame as a regular in Z Cars (1962-1970); I Claudius (1976) gave him acting credibility. Roles in The Avengers (1967), Randall and Hopkirk Deceased (1969), Arthur Of The Britons (regular, 1972), Into Infinity (1976), Blakes 7 (1978), Blackadder (1983), Dr Who (1986), John Silver's Return to Treasure Island (star, 1986). Films include Flash Gordon (1980), Henry V (1989), Robin Hood, Prince Of Thieves (1991), Hamlet (1996), Star Wars The Phantom Menace (1999). He also appeared in stage musicals: Cats (1985) and Metropolis (1989), Hard Times (2000). He has appeared in many productions with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre, as well as traditional English pantomimes.
