Testament of Arkadia | Born 1923, died 2015. Born and raised in England, he spoke fluent Italian, French, German and Russian. He was born as Lucio Rietti and credited as Robert Rietti or Robert Rietty. He was a child actor in the 1930s on stage and in several films. In the late 1930s he won a scholarship to the Italian Academy, and moved to Italy. But the scholarship was withdrawn because Rietti was Jewish. He returned to Britain just before the war and was interned as an enemy alien. Later he joined the Stars In Battledress group entertaining troops, working with John Gielgud and others. After the war performed on film, radio (several times with Orson Welles), and from the 1960s on TV. Among his screen appearances were The Italian Job (1969), The Omen (1976), Never Say Never Again (1983), Madame Sousatzka (1988). By the 1960s he became a renowned dubbing actor, from Adolfo Celi in Thunderball (1965, one of 8 Bond films) to Peter Sellers in Dr Strangelove (1969), to Orson Welles in Treasure Island (1973). In Waterloo (1970) he provided 98 different voices, including star Jack Hawkins (who he dubbed for his last 10 films, after Hawkins had surgery for throat cancer). He also did many voices for Once Upon a Time in America (1984). He received an Oscar nomination for dubbing 1989. He translated many Pirandello and other Italian plays into English. , for which he received an Italian knighthood, and wrote several original plays. In 2010, he published an autobiography, "A Forehead Pressed Against a Window". |
