Portugal October (series 1), November (series 2) 2003
€ 48.95; movie box set € 39.99
Single boxset (both series) 3 July 2010, exclusive to FNAC
The full series was released in two DVD box sets with 6 discs/24 episodes per set. The box artwork looks similar to the French TF1 edition, including a similar artwork for the box with the lettering Espaço:1999 in Portuguese.
The first series box set was released with major advertising; prominent displays at FNAC shops (the major European retailer), and colour adverts in all major newspapers.
TV commercials for the Space: 1999 and The Saint box sets also ran in the major channels, which is apparently a first for DVD -- seen previously (and very recently) only for the Indiana Jones Box Set. The TV ad unashamedly heralds Space: 1999 The Best Science Fiction series EVER
The newspaper advert blurb translates: One of the best science fiction series ever, 'Space 1999' stars the formidable couple Martin Landau and Barbara Bain, famous for their roles in 'Mission Impossible'. Influenced by the style of 2001 - A Space Odyssey, the series is set on a gigantic Moonbase. With a budget considered the most expensive for its time, Space: 1999 managed to have superb special effects by expert Brian Johnson (Star Wars - The Empire Strikes Back)
The collection motto below translates: Unforgettable collections that marked generations
.
On release, the first series set shot straight to number 2 at FNAC (ahead of the newly released Indiana Jones box set). Portuguese Public Radio ANTENA 3 marked the release of the Portuguese Space:1999 DVDs with a contest, offering trips to the Kennedy Space Center as well as the DVD packs
The following month, the Year 2 box set was released, again based on the French TF1 edition, but with the Koenig/Helena photo over-saturated. The top strap line states "a Fred Freiberger production"; the back cover credits do not mention Catherine Schell, but includes Prentis Hancock.
On September 16th 2004, a box set of the four compilation movies was released.
