Martin Landau Tapes

Martin Landau had most of the Space: 1999 episodes on video tape. These tapes still exist, and some will be shown at the 2024 London convention.

These tapes, from 1974 to 1979, are the first commercial video-cassette format, U-matic, developed by Sony in 1971. It had a maximum length of 1 hour, and a resolution of 250 lines. Broadcast quality was 525 lines (US) or 625 lines (rest of world); Beta and VHS were around 240 to 320 lines.

Martin's tapes are not off-air recordings, but original prints are directly from ITC New York. Some of the episodes are preview copies, with a slightly different version of the episode- notably The Metamorph, dated 7th April, only 2 months after filming had completed. Guardian of Piri also has different shots.

Below are the list of tapes, and their labels. Some have two different dates. Destination Moonbase Alpha is split over 2 tapes (because of the 1 hour limit), with 2 copies, titled "Return to Moonbase Alpha".

The episodes include the "Sponsor's Message" card for advertising breaks. Since 2005, all releases of the episodes have small edits and alterations (see more). These are the original broadcast version (or, for The Metamorph, a variation).
